Havana Vacations

"This was our second time travelling in Cuba and there was some notable differences in both the people and quality of what you are receiving. Our entire trip was centred around Havana. We had the opportunity to meet with family of a co-worker which was interesting in that what you see being portrayed is not exactly the reality of the economy. Street begging is common and although it is tempting to give one peso you are only setting precedents for them to continue this. It was learnt that some street beggars are actually earning more then the local Doctors. As tempting as it may be - refrain from doing it. We brought treats for the local children and when approached by them asking for the peso's we offered the fruit snack which they gladly accepted - most of these children only take that peso and give it to their parents - this is their job. We were asked by some of the local workers for pens or pencils which does seem to be in shortage there and this would be a good idea to bring as well. Money is now only CUC really in Cuba....no one is going to accept the local Cuban Peso any more and at times are very rude if that is what you produce. We did exchange only $10 worth of the National Peso as there were a couple of street vendors that did accept it as well as a really small market that we came across. I have to say that this trip the food was more enjoyable as we were not staying in a resort we had the opportunity to experience some real Cuban food - I have found that the quality and variety of food in the resorts is not very good. We found the best meals that we had were at Prado 12 Cafeteria - this was not actually a cafeteria by our standards. We had lobster, shrimp and chicken....all were very very good in taste and price. Los Nardos was the other we ate at and again the food was excellent in quality and price. We noticed that the locals frequent both of these restaurants as well.....there is always a line up at Los Nardos so expect to wait 15 to 30 minutes at any time of day. We also noticed that the portion size is huge at all restaurants, definitely one entree is enough for two adults. We stayed at NH Parque Hotel and found the staff friendly and it was clean and comfortable. The only complaint we had was the size of the pool....you have to get there very early if you want to have a pool lounge chair. I would strongly recommend this hotel for its location and value compared to the others in the area. Havana is attempting to conserve energy so you will note that some of the streets can be very dark and due to areas which are not level and have potholes this can be dangerous - a flashlight is recommended. Across the road from our hotel stops a bus that goes out of town - we took this bus to the beach. It is about a 30 minute ride and well worth it to go for a day. The beach is frequented by locals and it not as busy as any of the resorts I have stayed at. The location - Playa Del Este, Santa Maria del Mar is absolutely beautiful. White sand and the ocean is so clear here - it is a 9 km stretch of beach with not very much activity. There are a few places that you can buy a variety of drinks or rent things for the water or a even a beach chair and umbrella - but for the most part is so quiet and really relaxing. The bus trip cost us $3 plus rental of the chair and umbrella $4 - it was a nice inexpensive day - and very worth it. You will constantly be approached by people wanting you to take a ride by horse and carriage. I would caution all travellers to ensure the condition of the horse and equipment is acceptable. I did not support this and take a ride due to some of the terrible conditions of these horses. They work 12 hour days on very hot asphalt with little water and no food. Although they are conditioned this way it does not make it right. There is notable differences between horses that are kept very poorly and others that are fed and watered. Simply looking at the rib cage and hip bones - if you see them sticking out - this is not good, move on a find another. Also check the condition of the equipment they are using - we saw electrical wiring an chains being used where the leather has worn down. Again this is not comfortable and is cruel to these animals. It is important as travelers to educate ourselves and not condone these behaviors or nothing will change in these countries."

"Had a great time. Breezes Jibicoa is very clean and they work hard keeping this location looking well. The food could use improvements mainly in the morning buffet. The waiters are very polite and only issues we had was the room. Found ants and large bugs that kept finding their way into the room. Had to keep asking for room service as the maid did not clean our room daily.
But keep in mind Cuban people are trying hard to please people all the time.
We love this resort and yes would go back there again sometime. Weather was great the whole 7 days there but June to Sept is the raining season.
Bring a cooler with you so that you will not have to live with the small glasses they give you at the bar. Have a great time there and don't expect a 5 star but close to a 5 star service.

"This place is a must see if you go to Cuba. In fact I say this should be the first city to see if You want to experience Cuba. Resorts can be beautiful but this is a place to experience culture and history. There is lot to do and see form museums to concerts. When I was there in mid August I was lucky enough to catch a huge car naval at the melacon. Truly recommend this exciting city to anyone."

"Old Havana is one of my favorite places in the world. The culture and architecture give visitor to this area of Havana a wonderful experience. It you have the opportunity to stay over night, I would highly recommend it. Its much better to take your time then rush it in a day trip. The NH Parque Central is were we stayed and definitely recommend it! "
