Honduras is growing as a tourist destination, and travel here is easy, enjoyable and inexpensive.

The natural beauty and slow pace make it appealing to travelers who enjoy getting off the beaten track.

While the cities offer a few sights like museums and cathedrals, the real attractions are outdoors.

National parks, ancient ruins, lush jungles, breathtaking mountains, turquoise water, white sand beaches and an abundance of wildlife make Honduras more of an adventure than a vacation.

La Ceiba is the third largest city in Honduras and the largest on the northern coast. It is referred to as the "capital of ecotourism" and it does have many natural charms including Pico Bonito, or 'beautiful peak,' which soars to almost 2,500 meters in height and is surrounded by a verdant rainforest complete with cascading waterfalls and spectacular landscapes. Here you will also find the Cangrejal River, ideal for white water rafting and canoeing. La Ceiba is most celebrated for its spirited nightlife which fires up each Wednesday and reaches a frenzied pitch by Saturday night.

Roatan, at 64 kilometers long and just over 3 kilometers wide, is the largest of the Bay Islands found about 50 km off the northern shore of Honduras. A variety of hotels and resorts to suit almost any budget can be found here, as well as many dining options, several bars and clubs and some local shops. Tourists to Roatan will be pleased to discover that English is so widely spoken that many of the local inhabitants do not even speak Spanish. As well, Roatan has island-wide WiFi available. The island is surrounded by lovely beaches and the world's second largest coral reef, which actually hugs much of the shoreline.

"Guanaja is an amazing place and the people are great but [Coral Bay Dive Resort] almost ruined it for us. Us being a group of 24. The caye where many people live is interesting, safe and wonderful. The sand flies around the islands beaches are really awful."

Activities & Sports

With a portion of the second-largest barrier reef in the world, Honduras is one of the premier diving destinations in the world. There is no end to the outdoor activities you can find here from golfing and hiking, to horseback riding and whale shark spotting, and the highly recommended Canopy tour. Natural hot springs are located near Palma Real Caribe-Beach Resort and they offer natural volcanic mud for your skin while you bathe at the hot springs.

Dining & Nightlife

Most of La Ceiba's nicest restaurants are found around the Zona Viva area, which is generally the best place to grab a bite. Arrecife (best for seafood), Playa Taty, El Guapos, and La Palapa are a few options. Many of these restaurants convert to bars after food service ends, so dress appropriately if you want to hang around. For bars & nightclubs try Expatriados, Snake Bar, or Hibou. In Roatan there is Lobster Pot, Dixie & Mavis, or Bida. And in the evening Aura nightlclub, Rick's for live music, Nova's for dancing, and Sundowner's for catching a sunset.

Shopping

La Ceiba has a Mall with several shops; the most popular souvenirs stores are called "El Bueno Amigo." In Roatan shopping can be found in the West End and Cruise Ship Market. Pottery, junco art, woodcarvings, Maya replicas, and coffee are popular souveniers from Honduras.

Language: Spanish. English widely spoken.

Currency: Lempira. The US dollar is the only currency that is easily exchanged.

Climate: The climate varies significantly depending on altitude. Mid-altitude temperatures are fairly moderate with regular sunshine making the mercury climb from 15-20°C (59-68°F) to about 28°C (82°F) during the middle of the day. Rainfall is low to moderate with a patchy wet season from May to October.
