Our Opinion of Margarita Island

Welcome to Isla de Margarita, also locally know as the Caribbean Pearl, the most popular Venezuelan destination. The island has been developed to fulfil all the expectations and conveniences of the other Caribbean islands, but with a slightly more exotic South American twist. From fun filled beaches offering all the water sport activities around, to secluded white sand beaches waiting to be discovered, everyone who comes to the island will find the perfect place to rest, relax, or find adventure.

Of course there is so much more to see and do. The spectacular landscapes of mountains covered with lush vegetation, and the many national parks and nature reserves all await a visit from curious nature lovers. Hiking, mountaineering or mountain biking are just a few of the many opportunities available to visit these peaks. The three picturesque cities of Porlamar, Pampatar, and La Asunción display their colonial charm to all and offer many museums, historical sites and duty-free shops to explore. The many resorts will make your stay all the more pleasant, as you explore this wonderful island of delight and surprises.

More Margarita Island Vacation Information

The happening Playa El Agua is home to most resorts and is always lively, particularly on weekends. This long stretch of pristine sand is dotted by palm trees. Next in popularity, the Playa Parguito offers also much in the way of entertainment, restaurants and shops.

If you are nearer to Porlamar, choice beaches include Playa Bella Vista and Playa Morena. In the Pedro Gonzalez valley are the beautiful Playa Caribe and Playa Puerto Cruz. To the south is the popular Playa El Yaque, home to a couple of resorts.

For a more secluded spot, try Manzanillo, El Tirano, Punta Arenas, and Guacuco beaches. La Restinga Beach, located in the national park of the same name, is the longest beach of the island and is reached by a boat going through the lagoon.

"Recently just returned from Margarita Island stayed at the LTI Costa Caribe. We were there with our whole family of twelve, we all got sick, my father of 81 caught Typhoid fever from the poor sanitary conditions.

The hotel is very run down and poorly maintained, no real gym to speak of, pool table with missing balls, no ping pong pads and no tennis rackets. Pool on some days was very cloudy from poor maintenance, some days the pool bartender would end his day and the guests would have to work the bar for an hour or so. Food poor and repetitive, rooms small and poorly maintained just a bad hotel. The island itself is no jewel, locals consider it a huge garbage dump with everything from cans to cars everywhere. Do not go to Margarita island, and nolitours should take it off of it's destination list."

Things to know about Margarita Island Vacations

Activities & Sports
Margarita Island serves up all the water sport activities found at any other sun destinations. Among the possible activities, you will find jet skiing, water-skiing, paragliding, windsurfing at Playa El Yaque, sailing or boating, and banana boat rides. Surfers will enjoy the Playa Parguito El Tirano. Several companies offer fishing excursions, where you may catch red snapper, marlin, sailfish or yellow fin tuna.

There are spectacular coral reefs and some shipwrecks worth exploring while snorkelling and scuba diving. Two popular dive sites are Los Frailes, a group of small rock islands, and the Cueva el Bufon, a small cave where pirates are rumoured to have hidden their loot. There is even a wreck of a sunken ferry, with cars, to explore.

The Cerro El Copey Mountain and Macanao Peninsula offer incredible mountaineering, horse riding, biking and hiking experiences. Golfers are limited to one golf course at this time. The Isla Margarita Golf Club is a 70-par links course. Larger resorts also offer a few tennis courts.

Dining & Nightlife

There are plenty of clubs, bars and discotheques around to make your evening a festive experience. Locations and names do however change very frequently. The most constant places are Senor Frogs, Kamy Beach, Latin Bar and Nikki Beach. Your best bet is to head to Porlamar, around Avenida 4 de Mayo and Avenida Santiago Marino. Also, most resorts have in house nightclubs, bars and shows.

Several resorts and shopping malls have casinos, favourites being at the Margarita Hilton, Laguna Mar and Marina Bay hotels.

There is a nice array of restaurants to choose from in and around the major resort areas of Margarita, from elegant bistros to simple eateries located right on the beach. Suggestions for traditional meals include:

Shopping
A wonderful place to stroll around and explore and unlimited numbers of shops is in the town of Porlamar. Also, several shopping centers have been built, the most popular being the Centro Sambil Margarita, Avenida Jovito Villalba, Centro Comercial Rattan Plaza, Los Robles and Avenida 4 de Mayo.

But if you are looking for a more authentic shopping experience, head to El Mercado de los Conejeros, an outdoor market, which offers food, crafts, and dry-goods stalls. This wonderful daily market is located just outside Porlamar.

Languages: Spanish and the Venezuelan dialect, called Castellano.
Currency: Bolivar.
Climate: Margarita's tropical climate is very hot and tropical and knows little rainfall compared to the mainland. Fortunately, a cooling trade wind keep the climate very liveable The wettest months are July, August, and November though January. The average midday air temperature is 30° C and the water temperature usually hovers around 27° C.
Electricity: 110 V, 60 Hz.

Documents
A valid passport and an ongoing or return ticket are required. Canadians do not need a visa for touristic stays, only a Tourist Entry Card, issued by your airline, which is valid for up to 90 days.
